Quiver Distro & Press - online catalog list

December 2008 - Mailorder is OPEN! We are accepting requests and submissions, and in fact have been for the last two years, despite indications to the contrary. This webpage has not been updated since May 2006 and thus contains outdated information and does not represent our current catalog. We are in the midst of preparing a major update (many new titles and PDFs!), but until that update is finished, this page will remain in its 2006 state.

WELCOME to this simple webpage, which will function as a concise list of the materials we currently are choosing to make available. As of May 2006, this page also exists as a repository/archive of PDF master files that you can download, print, and distribute.

DISSEMINATE, DECENTRALIZE! - We are not trying to make a name for ourselves or establish 'quiver distro' as an exclusive provider of cutting-edge commodities. We would like to distribute these pamphlets so extensively that we become irrelevant as a source.
The primary focus of this project is to supply these publications to community libraries and to other rebels who are going to reproduce and disseminate them in their local area. We are seeding a decentralized distribution network, spreading words of liberation in mediums easily reproducible by anyone.

ORDERING: - This distro is not a business, and our only concern with money is to somehow break even and recover our expenses. Prices vary depending on your situation and what you are doing with the literature - but they are generally very low.
To 'order', send us a list of either the specific titles and quantities you are requesting, or just a general idea of the topics you are most interested in; and if you are willing to, tell us a bit about your project or your intentions for the literature. We will get back to you soon as we are able to.
Please be conscious of what vital information you hand over in e-mail messages - in other words consider giving your home address, phone number or life story to us with pen and paper rather than electronically.
All pamphlets are free to prisoners, and we have an edited list to be sent in to prisons that's more likely to make it past the screws.

PDF FILES ARE NOW AVAILABLE! - Anyone in any city in the world can print out their own first-generation master copies and hand them out to their friends in the streets. While there are obvious advantages to digitizing our work, we proceed with considerable hesitancy, for it is clear that there is a great qualitative loss in the conversion of ideas and human expression in to 'data'. With the introduction of any new technology comes greater efficiency - however, there is always much forefitted in terms of meaningfulness, quality and relationship. This is not a tradeoff that we should take lightly. When someone obtains these writings from the internet, there is no context, and context is at least as important as content. What does it mean that many young people now develop their revolutionary theory and strategy from reading articles on the web, rather than from discussions and experiences face-to-face with an informal network of friends, comrades, strangers? We need to be speaking to one another about our ideas and acting on them, not vegetating in the comfortable glow of a computer screen reading about alienation and the need for uncompromising opposition.

Making electronic versions of these pamphlets available is meant to increase and enable, not replace, the distribution of tangible paper copies of them. So, print the booklets out and make copies to share, start a reading group, add copies to the shelves of your local infoshop or community library.

You can download a printable 2-page PDF of our distribution list from March 2006 here.

All PDF documents are quality master files, (not sloppily scanned low-resolution garbage) except where otherwise noted.

Periodic updates will be made to this page, adding more PDF's and html files, and making corrections and improvements to what's already here.

Please email us about serious formatting and typing errors in any of these documents, broken links, etc.

We generally disregard intellectual property rights, and encourage you to as well. Re-publish and appropriate at will. If you are the author or editor of one of these publications and for some reason or another you would like us to take down the PDF file of your project, email and let us know.

See the technical notes and recommendations at the end of this page if you need basic instructions on using the digital files. The short of it is that an imposed PDF is what you use for printing, and a 'PDF for reading' is for viewing on screen.

Analysis & Theory

One might think of writings such as these as earnest yet inherently limited attempts at communicating. You musn't just read them, so much as enter in to dialogue with them, critically, starting from the basis of your own experiences and feelings and seeing where they connect with those of others'. Every true revolutionary knows that communication is not a matter of talking, but rather acting together.

It's soul-killing work, but if you want to assist us in the effort of getting these publications digitized and online, figure out what isn't already available as a PDF, scan it or lay it out, and send us the files. Get in touch if you need tips on the technical process involved, or if you need free layout and graphics software for your computer.

Technical notes and recommendations

Digital publishing jargon:
PDF - "Portable Document Format", a standard, universal file format developed by Adobe Systems that, in theory, will render a document to look exactly the same on any computer or operating system. In other words, it is a 'cross-platform', and 'device-independent' format that's the ideal digital medium for sharing and distributing printed media.
imposed - 'imposition' means the arrangement of individual pages on to master sheets ("spreads") so that, WHEN FOLDED or otherwise processed as a book/booklet/ 'zine, the pages will read in the proper order. This can be hard to explain but it's very simple. An 'imposed' PDF pamphlet is ready to be printed, and because of the mixed-up page order, it's confusing to try to read the spreads until folding has occured.
scanned - this means that the document was scanned off of the original paper master and exists as a collection of large bitmap/raster images. Scanned documents are naturally imprecise in comparison to real digital masters. Scanned PDF's are larger files, often with lower print quality in the end.
consecutive - for the purposes of this webpage, consecutive means that individual pages are laid out two at a time on spreads, in standard order. It will look like 1-2,3-4,5-6, etc. These files are mostly intended for reading on-screen. You can print them, but they won't function like booklets, more like 'packets'.
low rez - low resolution - for reading online, but probably won't print well.
MS Word Doc - a Microsoft Word document - we don't mean to endorse Microsoft software, but the fact remains that it's the most popular word processor, and people often give us MS Word files of their writings, so we've got to work with that.
duplexing - double-sided printing, as any quality laser printer can do.
saddle stiched - a book(let) binding technique, in which the sheets of paper are folded in half and stapled on the fold, resulting in the pages reading properly from front to back. Most magazines and pamphlets you see are 'saddle stiched'.

download Adobe Reader to open PDF files.

Notes on PRINTING these pdf files:
Obtain access to a laser printer. It's a nightmare to try and get these PDF zines to print properly on some clunky inkjet. Pretty much all office buildings and school campuses are riddled with network laser printers. It shouldn't be too difficult find one that is not metered, or to circumvent any metering system that may be present. Laptop computers can be helpful in this regard by allowing you to physically plug in to a network printer using a standard USB cable, thereby bypassing the local network.
Double sided print. (AKA 'Duplexing') - Most laser printers can automatically print a document on both sides of the stock, so there's no need to pull any weird re-feeding maneuvers like you might on an inkjet. It will probably take a few wasted sheets of paper to figure out what the hell you're doing. Somewhere in the various tabs and options presented in the Print dialogue on your computer, once you've selected the proper printing device, you should be able to locate a "two sided" or "duplex" printing option. It may give you two options - "long edge binding" and "short edge binding" (just figure out the difference between these by trial and error, it's very simple but not worth trying to describe here). If you can't get the printer to duplex, you can always print your master copy single-sided, and later, use the "1-2 sided" or "1-2 sided, rotate side 2" function on the photocopy machine when you reproduce it.
Find a copy hook-up. - Never pay normal prices for your copies. Never. There's always a way to print for free - exploit the loopholes.
Finishing - Find yourself a long-reach/long-arm stapler. Corporate chain box-stores such as Staples, Office Max and Office Depot all carry a Swingline brand long-reach stapler that can be liberated with relative ease, especially with a large enough backpack or sidebag. These devices are also called saddle stitchers or saddle stitch staplers. Higher quality long-reach staplers (Swinglines always crap out after prolonged use) are available for purchase over the internet.
You will also want some sort of solid, smooth object to do your creasing/folding. Fat pens/highlighters will do the trick, and other operatives like to use bones, butter knives, or jars... as you see this is very subjective.
We get the best results from stapling first, then folding, and always folding on both sides of the new booklet to make the binding even.

Notes on Desktop Publishing Software
We use InDesign to do layout, Photoshop to work with graphics, and Acrobat to do finishing moves on PDF files. The Adobe 'Creative Suite' (CS) software package includes InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive, and other apps. Though it retails at around $1k, it isn't difficult to obtain the Adobe CS or CS2 software for free. Try asking a friend to burn it for you, or use BitTorrent to download the files and Serial Box for illegitimate licensing.
The other leading desktop publishing application that people use is Quark XPress, v.6, 6.5, or 7. Adobe Pagemaker is out of date and old news at this point, and it's inpractical and just plain stupid to try and use word processors like Microsoft Word (some of the lousiest software ever produced) to do your layouts.
"Quite Imposing" - an excellent plugin for Adobe Acrobat that does automatic impositions of PDF files, IE will format your documents as booklets and books.
